A dedicated group of volunteers is helping people avoid surrendering their pets to Indianapolis Animal Care Services simply because they’ve fallen on hard times.

Indy CARES (Companion Animal Resources, Education and Support) works with people who have come to surrender pets to IACS. Often they’re in tears, because they don’t WANT to give up their pets. They simply can’t afford necessary care, they’re experiencing housing issues, or they just need some temporary help to get past a tough time. Indy CARES explores the need and seeks a solution.

Working with Friends of Indianapolis Animal Care Services Foundation, Indy CARES has raised funds for essential surgery, referred pet parents to services that can assist them, arranged fosters for animals that could go home again after temporary problems have been resolved, and generally helped to keep pets in homes where they’re already loved.

Fire, job loss, unexpected medical problems, and uncooperative landlords are just a few of the issues that can cause a beloved pet to lose its home. Indy CARES provides a service that is a key part of the No-Kill strategy by helping to keep pets out of the shelter system. Please visit their Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/IndyCARES/, to see their success stories, and consider sharing a few hours and/or a few dollars to help! These folks are true heroes.
